History of Barefoot Bay

Barefoot Bay began as an idea for a recreational vehicle vacation resort for those looking to escape the colder weather up north or just looking for a great place to relax.
In 1968, the Gulf Acceptance Corporation, purchased the original one thousand acres that would become known as Barefoot Bay. With that, the vision for a Polynesian themed recreation community had begun.

The beautiful Polynesian style clubhouse opened its doors in June of 1971. It would host up to 500 people and include a full kitchen. Early amenities consisted of a heated pool, 9-hole golf course, shuffleboard courts, tennis courts, two connecting lakes and a 776-foot long lit fishing pier over the beautiful Indian River.

When the clubhouse first opened, there were only 40 families in Barefoot Bay, but by July of 1971, that number increased to 67, with a steady influx of families thereafter.
By 1973, 256 homes had been purchased, bringing the population to 400 residents. The 18-hole golf course was completed and over the next two years, a convenience store, laundromat, beauty shop, insurance agency, doctor’s office, and a brick and mortar savings and loan were also added.

In 1984, Barefoot Bay officially became a Special Recreation District with its own Charter authorized by the Brevard County Commissioners. The Board of Trustees was then created.
Today, in addition to the Board of Trustees, Barefoot Bay also has an administrative staff consisting of a Community Manager, District Clerk, Finance Department, Resident Relations, Property Services, and the Food and Beverage Department.

Over the last 40 years, Barefoot Bay has continued to grow and expand. Today the community has three pools, a Lounge, the 19th Hole sports bar and restaurant, as well as an array of entertainment and recreational activities.

Welcome to Barefoot Bay the perfect place to live, eat and play!
