OCTOBER 2009 GOLF COMMITTEE MEETING

Meeting called to order on October 2, 2009, at 9:00 a.m. by Chairman, Tony Pitrulle.

Followed by Pledge of Allegiance.

Committee Members Present:  Chairman, Tony Pitrulle, and members Suzanne Peterson,  John Couch and Janice Huntington.  Member Ed Layton was unable to attend.

Also Present:  Director of Golf Jim Kormondy and District Liaison Tom Guinther.    Pro Shop Manager Sandy Lobello and Course Superintendant Mike Henderson were unable to attend.

Guests in Attendance:   Betty Antonelle, Pat Dunckley and John Hall.

Minutes:  Following a motion by Peterson, seconded by Couch, the minutes of the May 2009, meeting were approved as submitted.

Correspondence:  None.

Unfinished Business:  Guinther reported that FEMA denied the request for extension of the loan for the Equipment Building.  FEMA has made arrangements to close that case, which may mean that we'll have to pay some of that loan money back.  At this time, there is a possibility that the plans for the building will be dropped.

Kormondy said that he will take a tour around the entire perimeter of the Course to check to see if the out of bounds stakes are properly placed.

Kormondy reminded that Golf Committee Minutes are alway posted on the main bulletin board over the back counter.

New Business:   Peterson announced that 1 of the 2 tape recorders used to tape the Committee Meetings is not working.  She suggested that the Men's Club consider purchasing a replacement.

Pitrulle asked if additional black top could be used to smooth the cart path between the 6th green and the 7th tee.  Kormondy will relay that information.

Pitrulle asked if the 3 carts parked at the maintenance building were used for golfers.  Kormondy said that those were put in the rotation starting in January, when play is at its maximum.

Pitrulle asked again about beautifying the area around the back entrance to building D/E.

Kormondy said that because of dwindling membership in the ladies leagues, one of the Presidents asked for an opinion about allowing greens fee players to join leagues, as long as they had a established handicap.  His opinion is that it would be a good idea, and certainly permissable.  He suggested that the Committee consider offering its opinion.

Upon a motion by Peterson, seconded by Huntington, and passed unanimously, the Committee recommended that leagues consider opening their memberships to greens fee players, with established handicaps, to join and play in leagues.

Peterson announced that there would be at least 2 openings on the Golf Committee for the year beginning January 1, 2010.  Those interested should place their nomination, or letter of interest in the Committee mail box, in the Pro Shop.

Report from Director of Golf, Jim Kormondy:   It was a slow summer.  We've been using a skeleton crew.  As play starts to pick up, we'll have more Ranger coverage on the Course.  We're now taking applications for volunteers to wash the carts in the evenings.  This will eliminate 1 of the Ranger shifts, and result in a savings in the budget.  There have been a number of applications.  As soon as those have been screened, we should have those chosen in place by the end of next week.  In exchange for their volunteer help, they will receive greens fees.  They won't have membership status, but will be able to play on a space available basis.  However, during prime play times, they will not be able to take up a tee time.  So during the summer and after peak play times they'll be able to play.  Whether or not they'll be able to play in League play is up to the individual leagues.  Kormondy stressed that he believed that they should be able to play in League play as long as they have an established handicap and pay handicap fees.

During the summer we had a 9 week Junior Golf Program.  There were 32 participants.  Two of our junior participants are playing for their high school teams:  Megan Sears, who is the #1 player at Bayside High; and Joey Barghouty, who is 6th on the boys team.

In July we had the Pro Shop Appreciation Tournament.  It was a skills tourament, with 56 participants.  In September we had the Member Member Tournament, with 54 participants.  The next tournament will be the Sadie Hawkins Tournament in November.

Bette Antonelle asked if there had been any consideration given to rescheduling the Member Guest Tournament to a time other than May, when more people are still here.  Kormondy said no, because of lack of response in the past; and that most members have said that they didn't participate because they didn't know anyone outside the club to invite.  If at some time we find that another tournament isn't working, we might  move it up.  He said if he gets an overwhelming demand to reinstate it, he will consider it.

Membership is currently at 485.

We're putting together a comprehensive tree plan to take before the Board.

During the summer, the #8 and #11 lake banks were completed.  Also the drainage problems on #3 has been completed; and the problem between #4 green and #5 tee is being taken care of.  The drainage problem next to the #8 tee is going to be solved with the installation of a sump.  Now that we have our own back hoe, we'll be able to rip out the collapsed culverts ourselves, without having to go out to bid.  Also during the summer we did 2 aerifications.  Next week the crew will be doing verticutting.

Report from Liaison, Tom Guinther:     On October 24, there is a Meet the Clubs Day at building A.  Marge White, of the Homeowner's Association, has asked that the Committee consider putting up a table to highlight the Club and the leagues.  The Committee agreed that it should participate along with someone from the Pro Shop and representatives of Ladies 9 Holers, Ladies 18 Holers and Men's Leagues.

The new fiscal year began October 1.  Guinther asked if the plans for the 2 current carryover projects - sump between #7 and #8, and the tree planting  - will be coming before the Board this month.  Kormondy said yes.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:30.  The next meeting will November 6, 2009, at 9:00 a.m.
