JUNE 2006 GOLF COMMITTEE MEETING Meeting called to order on June 3, 2006, at 9:07 a.m. by Chairman, Bob Peet. Followed by Pledge of Allegiance. Committe Members Present: Chairman: Bob Peet; Members: Tom Guinther, Jeanne Osborne and Suzanne Peterson. Excused absence: Hugh Murphy. Also Present: Director of Golf, Jim Kormondy, Golf Shop Manager, Sandy Lobello, and Assistant Course Superintendent, Carolyn Cofer. Guests in attendance: Tony Pitrulle and John R. Smith, liaison member from the District Board. The minutes of the May 2006, meeting were approved with the following corrections: "removal of shrubs along the water on Hole 7" corrected to read "Hole 17." Correspondence: None. Unfinished Business: Member, Tom Guinther asked about progress on the netting between Hole 18 and the parking lot. Jim Kormondy reported that the project would be finished by the end of the summer. New Business: There was a discussion about the feasibility of randomly checking to make sure that all members are posting all their scores. Jim Kormondy said that there was insufficient staff to do this on a regular basis, but that if there was concern about individual golfers that it should be brought to his attention so that he could follow up. There was a suggestion that the Handicap Chairs of each of the Golf Associations might consider forming a Handicap Committee to do a random check. There was a general consensus that any form of random enforcement of posting would be subject to manipulation by those intent upon manipulating their handicaps. It was decided that the Womens' 9 Hole and 18 Hole Golf Associations and the Mens' Golf Association would bring the issue to their general meetings to remind all of the importance of posting all scores so as to maintain a fair handicapping system for all. Sandy Lobello said that she will make new signs stating that all scores must be posted. Report from Pro Shop Manager, Sandy Lobello: In response to last month's request that a 9 Hole Couples League be formed, sign-up sheets were posted on each of the Association's bulletin boards. The signs have been up for a month, yet no one has signed up. That may be because so many people have gone North. The signs will be left up so that those returning from the North may have a chance to sign up. Membership is up by 3 people. Regular membership is 488. There are 14 associate members. There is also 1 summer membership. Report from Director of Golf, Jim Kormondy: Member/Guest Tournament was last Saturday, May 28. We had 96 participants. It was a great day, and everybody seemed to have a good time. The next tournament is the Devereux Tournament, scheduled for June 24. Junior Golf starts next Tuesday, June 6, and will go all summer long until school starts in August. They will have tournaments every Wednesday. Next week, June 3 - 10 is Womens' Golf Week, sponsored by American Express, the PGA and Play Golf America, to bring new golfers into the sport. To honor that, we are giving free greens fees for women, after 11 a.m. all week long. Women will still have to pay the $5 user fee and cart fees. There will also be a free Womens' Golf Clinic on Thursday, June 8, at 11:30 a.m., on the 1st fairway. On June 15, at 11:30 a.m., also on the 1st fairway, McGregor will be coming for a Demo Day. They will be bringing all kinds of clubs and equipment to try. There will also be a swing monitor so that swing speeds can be measured. Report from Assistant Superintendant, Carolyn Cofer: We had an inch and eight-tenths of rain last month. We've airified the greens. Following concerns expressed at last month meeting, the grass clippings are no longer being dumped in the lakes, Instead, the clippings are being spread along the edge of the rough, next to the water. Also in response to a concern brought up at last months meeting, the divots on the driving range have been repaired and are being cared for on a regular schedule. Sandbuckets on the driving range are being kept full, so that those using the range can repair divots as they go. We will be verticutting the fairways and the tees. We're trying to get a blower so that we can blow off all the clippings. We still need a building. Jim Kormondy said that according to the timeline the new building is in the permitting stage, and is due to be completed and occupiable by December. Liaison, John R. Smith asked what color was planned for the shutters on the Pro Shop. Sandy Lobello and Jim Kormondy reported that the shutters would be painted the same green as the existing trim and shutters. There was a general discussion about the 5% budget request for equipment, and the resultant proposed 5% membership fees. Questions were raised about golf being the only District activity charging user fees, while those using tennis courts, lawn bowling courts, shuffle board courts and swimming pools were charged nothing for the use of District facilities. There will be no Golf Course Committee Meeting in July or August. The next meeting will be on Friday, September 1, 2006, at 9 a.m Jeanne Osborne made a motion to adjourn, seconded by Suzi Peterson.
