Barefoot Bay Golf Course
MARCH 2009 GOLF COMMITTEE MEETINGMeeting called to order on March 6, 2009, at 9:00 a.m. by Chairman, Tony Pitrulle. Followed by Pledge of Allegiance. Committee Members Present: Chairman, Tony Pitrulle, and members John Couch, Ed Layton and Janice Huntington. Suzanne Peterson has been excused. Guests in attendance: Sharon Hopkins and Grace Peet. Also Present: Director of Golf Jim Kormondy, Course Superintendant Mike Henderson and District Liaison Tom Guinther. Minutes: The minutes of the February 2009, meeting were approved as submitted. Correspondence: None. Jim Kormondy asked that the matter of a member's one month suspension from tournament play be discussed out of order. He explained that the member had been suspended after having been disqualified for knowingly entering a wrong score (after picking up on the 8th hole) during the Club Championship. Kormondy said that the member wished to apologize to the Committee, and ask for an early end of the suspension, in order to be able to play in the Community Fund Tournament that is scheduled for this month. Following a motion by Layton, seconded by Pitrulle, the member's apology was accepted and the suspension lifted. Layton asked how the member could have been disqualified from the tournament and still have been awarded a skin on a later hole. Kormondy explained that the Club Championship was a stroke play event; while skins is a hole by hole event, governed by match play rules. He said that it was his opinion that a disqualification from a stroke play event did not disqualify one from the match play. He went on to say that was the way he had always looked at it, and that was the way "we have always done it in the past." Unfinished Business: Huntington asked about the financial structure of the Course; whether the Course was losing money. Kormondy explained that the Course was meeting its budget. Guinther added that there was considerable good will generated when the Course hosted charity tournaments. He also said that by awarding prizes in Pro-Shop merchandize we were able to keep tournament entry fees down, and give more of the tournament proceeds to charity. Kormondy said that the Junior Tournament would be held on Saturday, April 11; the last weekend of the Easter break. That will give the juniors the prior week to practice; and, it's close enough to summer to spark their interest in the Summer Junior Golf Program. Pitrulle asked Henderson when the tree on the 18th tee would be removed. Layton reminded that we had talked about roping off the tree. For the time being the sand that has been spread around the base of the tree is the short term solution, as to rope it off would be too big an obstruction. Pitrulle remarked that golfers were still walking over the sand and the tree roots - still posing a risk of slipping and falling. Pitrulle asked about the weather scanner. Kormondy reported that it was up and running. Pitrulle asked if the windshields for the carts were in. Kormondy said they were. Pitrulle asked if Kormondy had made up a "Ranger" sign for the Ranger cart. Kormondy said not yet. Layton asked about the auctioning of the remaining old carts. Kormondy said an auction would take place the first week in April. There will be a sign up sheet for each cart, and people will be allowed to write in their bids, with the minimum being $1,200. The carts are all about equal. They are all the same year, and all have good batteries. Guinther said that budget time was coming up soon. He stressed that it was important that the Course finish all of this year's budgeted projects, so as not to have them carried over into next year. New Business: Pitrulle thanked Henderson and his staff for the great shape the course was in for the Club Championship. He also thanked Kormondy and the Pro-Shop staff for all the hard work in making the Club Championship a success. Report from Director of Golf, Jim Kormondy: The Club Championship Tournament was last month. John Layden and Kathy Mello retained their Champion titles. The Community Fund Tournament is scheduled for March 21. The Lions Club Closest to the Pin contest will be for all golfers on March 12 and 13. Cost is $1. The Couples League end of the season tournament will be on April 4. For the upcoming budget, we will be sticking with the 5 year plan. The lake bank projects remain a priority - particularly around 2, 3 and 6. Report from Course Superintendant, Mike Henderson: We're looking forward to warm weather. We'll be doing a lot of irrigation to get the grass growing. Other Business: Grace Peet reported that during the Ladies 9 Hole Charity Tournament, the work crew continued to work in the sand trap while golfers were approaching the green. Henderson said he would talk to his staff about the need to stop working and step out of the way of approaching golfers. Pitrulle reminded Henderson to train the crew to park their carts out of the line of play, so the crew member doesn't get hit. Layton suggested the crew be required to wear some type of hard hat. Grace Peet asked why, on Ladies Day, regular golfers were scheduled immediately behind the ladies. Kormondy said that tee times were supposed to be scheduled 45 minutes after the ladies last tee time. He said that there should be at least 3 open holes behind the ladies. Huntington asked if there was any recourse if a following golfer hits into you. Kormondy suggested a polite/civil reminder to the offender, who (he said) probably didn't think he/she could hit the ball that far. There being no further business, Pitrulle adjourned the meeting at 9:35 a.m. The next Golf Committee Meeting will be on Friday, April 3, 2009, at 9:00 a.m |
