JANUARY 2009 GOLF COMMITTEE MEETING

Meeting called to order on January 2, 2009, at 9:10 a.m. by Chairman, Tony Pitrulle.

 Followed by Pledge of Allegiance.

Committee Members Present:  Chairman, Tony Pitrulle, and members Ed Layton, Suzanne Peterson, John Couch and Janice Huntington.

 Guests in attendance:    Pat Dunckley.

Also Present:  Pro Shop Manager, Sandy Lobello, Course Superintendant, Mike Henderson and District Liaison, Tom Guinther.  Golf Pro, Jim Kormondy is not in the office today, as his oldest daughter is getting married tomorrow.

Minutes:  Following a motion by Layton, seconded by Peterson the minutes of the December 2008, meeting were approved as submitted.

 Correspondence:  None

Unfinished Business:  Peterson asked when the windshields for the new fleet of golf carts will be delivered and installed.  Lobello didn't know.

Peterson asked about the 4 old golf carts, parked and unprotected in the maintenance area.  Lobello said that she understood that they were to be sold at auction.  Guinther said that the District had been thinking of readying 2 of them for use by Code Enforcement; and perhaps using 2 of them for maintenance.

The batteries are discharged on all of them.  Henderson will see about towing them over to the District maintenance barn to protect them from the elements.

Layton again suggested that 1 or 2 of the old carts be designated and marked for use by rangers; or that one of the new carts be so designated and marked.

Pitrulle asked about redoing the cart path by the 14th green.  Henderson said he will fill it in with rock.

Pitrulle asked what had been done about replacing the weather scanner.  Lobello said that she had researched available scanners, and would be ordering a replacement.

Couch asked about the maintenance shed.  Guinther said that the maintenance shed appears to be a "dead issue."   All the ground work has been done; including clearing the site, and getting the plans and moving the 13th green.  Although the money was at one time budgeted, it has been spent.  It will have to be budgeted again.  The FEMA money that the Bay received can all be accounted for in the removal of the old shed, fixing up the green shed on #8, all the site work and the plans.  However, a new engineering study has to be done, and at the last District Board meeting no Board member would even make a motion to consider that.  Guinther explained that as Chairman of the District Board he cannot make a motion, but plans to put the matter on the District Board agenda as a consensus item.

New Business:   Janice Huntington was welcomed as a new member of the Golf Committee.

Peterson asked when the dead palm tree on the back of the #9 green will be removed.  Henderson said it will be removed next week.

Layton asked again what can be done about the exposed roots of the tree on the #18 tee, so that people don't trip over the roots.  There was discussion about putting mulch over the roots or removing the tree.  Henderson said that removal would require a stump grinder, which could be quite costly.

Pitrulle asked if rangers could tell people to fill their fairway divots.  He also said that the grounds crew had not been sanding the divots on the tee boxes.

Henderson will remind his crew that sanding tee box divots must be done on a daily basis.

Pitrulle asked about the cause of the wet area between the #12 green and #13 tee box.  Henderson said that he has been working with the watering system, adjusting the sprinkler flow so as to give both the green and the tee box the right amount of water, without overwatering the area in question.  Henderson added that he had been having some trouble with the sprinkler system, but has assigned a crew member to work on irrigation.  He said that he hopes that the smaller of the pumps (called a jockey pump) is the problem.  He said that he thinks that because it has sunk, it is causing mud from the lake bottom to be pulled into the system.  He is looking at ways to float the pump so that it won't pull in mud.  If that doesn't solve the problem, then we would have to hire a diver to look at the screens in the bigger pumps.

Pitrulle asked about extending the concrete cart path circles at the #6, #11 and #13 tees, as carts are cutting into the grass on the tee boxes and the areas inside the circles.  Guinther said that would have to come out of the capital account, and is for Kormondy to decide.  Henderson will talk with Kormondy.

Report from Pro Shop Manager, Sandy Lobello:   The Veteran's Council Tournament is scheduled for January 10.  So far, 116 have signed up.  We can accomodate 160.

The Club Championship, a 2 day tournament will be February 20th and 21st.

There are no final figures on 2009 memberships, as we are still taking in monies.  To date there are 16 Semi-annual memberships, which run from October 1 through March 31.

Guinther asked if there were plans for a Kids Tournament, like the one we had last year.  Peterson suggested that Kormondy try to plan for a Kids Tournament during the President's Day weekend.  Lobello will talk with Kormondy.

Report  from  Course Superintendant, Mike Henderson:   We're close to getting new equipment:  an articulating, rotary mower and a fertilizer.  We expect delivery in the next few weeks.

The greens have been re-seeded, again.

Pitrulle asked about the fish kill we've seen recently.  Huntington suggested that we test the water to see if there is anything in the water contributing to the fish kill.  Henderson agreed to take a sample and send it off for testing.

Upon a motion by Layton, seconded by Peterson, the meeting was adjourned 10:00 a.m.

The next Golf Committee Meeting will be on Friday, February 6, 2009, at 9:00 a.m.
