JANUARY 2008 GOLF COMMITTEE MEETING

Meeting called to order on January 4, 2008, at 9 a.m. by Acting Chairman, Tony Pitrulle.

 Followed by Pledge of Allegiance.

Committee Members Present:   Acting Chairman, Tony Pitrulle, and members Ed Layton, Jeanne Osborne.  Suzanne Peterson was excused.

Guests in attendance:   Al Glashauser, John Barry and Tom Guinther.

Also Present:  Director of Golf, Jim Kormondy, Pro Shop Manager Sandy Lobello and Course Superintendant, Mike Henderson.

Correspondence:  Letter from John Couch asking to be considered for a 2 year term on the Committee.  After nomination by Osborne, seconded by Layton, Couch was elected for the term January 2008 - December 2009.   John Couch then took his place on the committee.

An old letter from the Barefoot Players, asking for donations toward a new curtain, was passed along to the Mens' League, as the the Golf Committee has no funds available to it.

Election of Chairman:   Osborne nominated Tony Pitrulle.  Nomination seconded by Layton.  Pitrulle accepted the nomination, and the vote was unanimous to confirm him as Chairman.

Minutes:  Following a motion by Osborne, seconded by Layton, the minutes of the December 2007, meeting were approved as distributed.

Unfinished Business:   Layton reported that he had asked the Mens' 9 Holers for their opinion on officially adopting the new green forward tees for their league play.  The 9 Holers showed no interest, at this time.  Couch said that he believed the Mens' League should insist that the 9 Holers play from the green tees.  Osborne said that if the Mens' 9 Holers were not interested, then the red, ladies tees should be restored, and the green tees eliminated.  Kormondy said we needed to keep the option open for all players, not limit our decision to the Mens' 9 Holers.  He added that not every golfer was a member of a league.   The purpose of the green tees is to allow men to play from the forward tees and establish a handicap.  Additionally, the idea of sex based tees has pretty much been eliminated from most golf courses.  Kormondy believes that, with time, men golfers will become more comfortable with the idea of using the forward tees, and adopt them for their use.  Kormondy suggested that a way to publicize and encourage use of the forward tees would be to require green tee use for the Over 80s Tournament.

Report from Director of Golf, Jim Kormondy:   The Junior/Adult Holiday Tournament on December 27, 2007 was both successful and fun.  The format of alternating shots worked well.  Teams all finished within 3 hours.  Juniors either brought their own adult partners or were paired with adult volunteers.

January is pretty busy, with 2 tournaments scheduled.  The Over '80' Open, on January 25, will be a shotgun start, accomodating between 30 and 40 golfers.  There will be prizes for low net and low gross scores.

The Veterans Council Tournament is scheduled for January 12.  Golfers have until January 9 to sign up.  So far, 115 golfers have entered.  We can take up to 160.  Format will be low net/in flight.  Tee times will be posted by noon on January 10.  There will be four hole-in-one prizes, including a Pontaic for a hole-in-one on #4.  Cost is $25 per person.  The tournament will be followed by an award party.  There will be lots of door prizes.  Food will be provided by Riverside Auto Body.  The theme is "Veterans Working Together."  There is a list of items for donations to be sent to troops who are overseas.

The new signs advising carts to stay on cart paths have been placed.

Report from Pro Shop Manager, Sandy Lobello:   At the end of December, we had 523 regular memberships (combined single and family),  22 semi-annual memberships (October through March) and 17 associate/non-resident memberships; for a total of 562.

Report  from Course Superintendant, Mike Henderson:  This month we'll be top dressing greens (for ball marks).  Last month we sprayed for weeds.  We tried the buckets, but the tee bucket is already missing, and the sand bucket hasn't needed refilling for the last 2 weeks.  The experiment has not seemed to be successful.  However, Henderson will leave the buckets out a little longer.

Pitrulle suggested that the trash cans be secured with a chain attached to the ball washers.

Henderson has added a section to the building to hide a few more pieces of equipment.

No progress has been made on removing the gas tanks.  However, when Henderson next orders gas, he will request that the tanks be removed.

Henderson reported that we can purchase water coolers/fountains for $300 each.  He suggested that the Course add 2 coolers, and eliminate the existing 6 water jugs, which are potentially unsanitary.  The coolers could be located under the roofs, on the outside of each of the restrooms.  Henderson will do further research on location and cost, then bring a proposal to the February Committee meeting.

Couch asked about rakes for the bunkers.  Henderson advised that 53 rakes have already been purchased and placed.  Henderson will check to see where rakes are needed, and order additional rakes.  Guinther said that on Wednesday his threesome caught up with the 9 Holers at the 10th hole.  Not only were they playing very slow, but not one of the 9 Holers raked the bunker after hitting out.

Guinther asked Henderson to have his crew pay better attention to the edging of bunkers.  He suggested that the edges be groomed manually, and that sand that has been pushed out of the bunkers, be placed back inside bunkers.

Other Business:   Barry asked about the painting of the pole on 14.  Henderson said that will be taken care of this week.  Barry also commented that the bunkers on 14 and 15 were not edged in preparation for the last Pro-Am.  Henderson agreed to look at them.  Barry asked that the grass in the area around the hole near 14, where the drainage pipe is, be left longer, so that people won't drive carts.  Henderson will look at it today, and keep Barry informed of the plan to remedy the problem.

Couch asked if Kormondy will be requesting new carts this year.  Kormondy said that he will be recommending that new carts by purchased.

Osborne asked how many grounds crew members worked for Henderson.  Henderson said there were 7, including himself.

Following a motion by Osborne, seconded by Layton, the meeting was adjourned at 9:45 a.m.

The next Golf Committee Meeting will be on Friday, February 1, 2008, at 9:00 a.m.
